How Heartworms Effect Cats & Dogs

We all want our cats and dogs to be happy and healthy while they are alive. They love us unconditionally and we love them too. Our furry friends require regular healthcare, just like us, to monitor their health and get the care they need to address any health concerns that may arise. A common health concern among our pets is heartworms. Heartworms are parasitic roundworms that cause dirofilariasis. They are transmitted through the bites of mosquitoes. So, what are the effects of contracting heartworms? The effects include:

  • Lung Disease
  • Heart Failure
  • Organ Damage
  • Tiredness
  • Difficulty Breathing

While you cannot always tell that heartworms are present, you can keep a lookout for the symptoms, some of which are mentioned above. Common symptoms of heartworm disease are tiredness, difficulty breathing, sickly appearance, coughing, weight loss, and decreased appetite. If you notice these symptoms, you should have your pet tested for heartworms immediately. The earlier it is detected, the more likely it can be effectively treated. However, failure to detect it promptly may result in the death of your furry friend.
